US officials say Jonathan’s minister stole $6bn – Oshiomhole

Image
Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, on Monday took a swipe at the Peoples Democratic Party government of former President Goodluck Jonathan, saying the party destroyed Nigeria. Oshiomhole, who was a member of President Muhammadu Buhari’s delegation to the United States, expressed delight that Nigeria now has a President who talks with confidence unlike “a President that is blabbing and is not sure of what the issues are.” The governor spoke with State House correspondents shortly after meeting Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He said he had decided not to bother about anything the PDP says about the present administration because he did not expect the party to be praising a government that is doing better than it did while in charge. He claimed that so bad was the situation under Jonathan that members of Buhari’s delegation were told in US how a minister under the President stole $6billion. He said the PDP succeeded in supervising Nigeria’s liq...

Senate rule forgery: Buhari won’t stop trial of suspects – Presidency

Image
Saraki, Lawan The Presidency on Sunday said President Muhammadu Buhari would not stop the prosecution of anybody indicted in the report of the Nigeria Police on the forgery of the Senate Standing Order. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said this on Sunday in an exclusive interview with one of our correspondents in Abuja. Shehu said Buhari believed in the rule of law and would not do anything that would derail any judicial process, stressing that those who were constitutionally saddled with the process did not need the President’s clearance to do their job. He said, “They do not need the President’s clearance to prosecute anybody found guilty of any investigation. President Muhammadu Buhari, as all Nigerians know, believes very strongly in the rule of law. “The President will therefore not do anything that will stop the judicial process. He won’t stop it (the trial of suspects in the Senate forgery case).” There were reports on Sunda...

US to trace Nigeria’s stolen funds

Image
The United States will offer to help Nigeria’s new leader track down billions of dollars in stolen assets and increase US military assistance to fight Islamic militants, US officials said, as Washington seeks to “reset” ties with Africa’s biggest economy. The visit to Washington by President Muhammadu Buhari is viewed by the US administration as a chance to set the seal on improving ties since he won a March election, hailed as Nigeria’s first democratic power transition in decades. US cooperation with Buhari’s predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, had virtually ground to a halt over issues, including his refusal to investigate corruption and human rights abuses by the Nigerian military. “President (Barack Obama) has long seen Nigeria as arguably the most important strategic country in sub-Saharan Africa. “The question is: would there be an opportunity to deepen our engagement? That opportunity is now,” US Deputy Secretary of State, Tony Blinken, told Reuters. The improving ties with Nigeria...

Even if Tinubu is made INEC boss, APC can’t win Ekiti again —Fayose

Image
The governor of Ekiti State, Mr Peter Ayodele Fayose, in this exclusive interview, bares his mind on a number of national issues. Deputy Editor, SAM NWAOKO, brings excerpts. SIR, how do you see being a govern or under President Muhammadu Buhari? Elections have come and gone and, as I always say, President Muhammadu Buhari is the president of Nigeria, not by his own grace or by my own grace but by God’s grace. If I tell you that I wanted Buhari as president, I am a liar. I wanted Jonathan but God has given it to Buhari and so, we all have to submit to the will of God, the will of Allah, because He gives power to whosoever He willeth. So, I have congratulated Buhari; I wish him success and a good tenure. However, that does not remove the fact that if he is not doing it rightly we will not state our mind. It is a free society; there is no almighty governor; there is no almighty president. We are all governed by civility and by the constitution. It was in those days that somebody...

My husband is a General Overseer but sleeps with his prayer partners

Image
Wife exposes ‘man of God’ in bitter divorce suit The wife of the General Overseer of a church, Holy Church of God, has dragged her husband to seek a divorce on the grounds of several allegations of adultery and infidelity. The woman, Glory Ibeh, accused her husband, Pastor Amadi Ibeh, before an Ojo customary court, of, among other things, sleeping with many of the church’s female members, battering, lack of respect and love as well as neglect of his duties as a husband and father. The petitioner told the court that the cracks in their seven-year-old marriage became expanded when she started noticing unusual closeness between her husband and some female members of the church. “At first, I mistook their closeness for maybe follow-up on deliverance or counselling. “Then I started hearing rumours of how he has been desecrating the house of God by having carnal knowledge of some of his prayer partners. I openly confronted him and he denied it vehemently.” After the first encounter, all effo...

$182m Halliburton Scandal: Buhari orders preparation of case-file

Image
As President Muhammadu Buhari travels to  the United States (US) today to engage President Barack Obama  in talks  on  economic, security, financial and anti-graft issues, it has emerged that he has ordered the preparation of the case-file that would lead to the prosecution of the indicted persons  in the $182 million Halliburton bribery scandal. Sunday Vanguard gathered that the President’s  directive  followed  the requirement by the US government of evidence to show that Buhari was ready to prosecute the suspects  in Nigeria for their roles in the bribery scandal before it  could  partner other European countries in releasing the $141million dollars allegedly looted from Nigeria  and lodged  in various overseas  banks. According to top security sources, Buhari, based on the outcome of investigations by  the panel set up to look into the scandal, is scheduled to tell  Americans officials during this week...

I still cook my husband’s meals — Aisha Buhari

Image
Despite the retinue of staff at the presidential villa waiting on the First Family, President Muhammadu Buhari’s wife, Aisha, still cooks his food. She made this known on Saturday while hosting some children to an elaborate reception as part of activities marking this year’s Eid-el-Fitri. At the party held inside the old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the President’s wife, after spending about two hours with the children, sought their permission to go and make dinner for her husband, who she said was alone at home. “I’m going to leave you soon. I want to go back home to cook for my husband. Because my children are here playing with you, nobody is at home, only my husband. I want to go back home to be with him and also cook dinner for him,” she told the highly elated children. Before her exit, she urged the children to be good ambassadors of their parents and the country. While saying that the future of the country is in the hands of children, Mrs. Buhari advised them to...

Muhammadu Buhari’s United States Visit Will Cost Nigeria, N2.2billion. -

President Muhammadu Buhari will be visiting Washington D.C, the US capital for his meeting with President Barack Obama next week, Monday with an announced 32-man delegation and unannounced aides numbering an average of 10 that would be accompanying governors, ex- governors, State House officials and businessmen. This will bring the total number of Nigerians on this visit with President Buhari to about 229, being the biggest Presidential delegation in Nigerian democratic history. This contingent will cost Nigeria about N2.2billion from the virtually empty Treasury. The Presidency have earlier announced that those expected to join the President on the visit include Governors Kashim Shettima (Borno), Rochas Okorocha (Imo), Adams Oshiomhole (Edo), Tanko Al-Makura (Nasarawa) and Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo) Each with 15 aids. The rather large delegation will also have former Rivers State Governor Chibuike Amaechi; Buhari’s running mate in the 2011 presidential election, Pastor Tunde Bakare; for...

Buhari Turns Down Former Petroleum Minister Alison- Madueke Offer To Refund $250 Million

Immediate past Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has offered to refund the sum of $250 million dollars to the Nigerian government in return for immunity from further investigation and possible prosecution, SaharaReporters has learned. However, her overture has reportedly received a cold response from President Muhammadu Buhari. A source in Aso Rock and a ranking member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) told our correspondent that the former minister has been reaching out to influential government and ruling party officials, in and outside Abuja, to prevail on President Buhari to accept her offer and let bygones be bygone. According to our sources, Mrs. Alison- Madueke had enlisted the support of several figures close to Mr. Buhari, including Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State, to intercede with the incumbent president. Mrs. Alison-Madueke was one of the closest ministers to former President Goodluck Jonathan, and is reputed to have anchored an...

DSS detains Jonathan’s Chief Security Officer

The Department of State Services has detained Gordon Obua, the Chief Security Officer to former President Goodluck Jonathan . It was learnt that Obua was arrested last Thursday and detained at the DSS headquarters in Abuja. His detention, our correspondent gathered, was part of the probe of officials under Jonathan’s administration ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari. The reason for Gordon’s detention could not be immediately established, but it was gathered that investigators may extract salient information on key officials in Jonathan’s government from the former CSO. Sources stated that the detention of the former security aide to Jonathan was meant to show that no former official in the past government would be spared if found to have mismanaged or embezzled public funds. “The arrest and detention of the former CSO is an indication that every former minister or senior official under Jonathan’s government are not exempted from probe except those that have no criminal suspicion ...

Alcohol: One sip, many deaths

Who would have thought of a day where merry would turn sour and end in mourning? A school of thought actually gave a hint to that effect when it said ‘sorry doesn’t kill, it is joy that kills’. Over the years, there has been an unending debate to the consumption of strong beverage, alcohol as the world calls them and ogogoro as it is locally called. While some arguments are founded on religious bias; others are based on opinions, depending on who the speaker is. But importantly, the place of health on issues affiliated to it is inarguably centered on facts from established research on the subject matter. Recently, the news of how alcohol suddenly turned to ‘last supper’ of some sort has gone beyond borders. First was the inconclusive case of Odi-Irele in Ondo State, where alcohol was accused for the death of about 15 people amidst other speculative and unproven traditional factor in the community. Next up was Rivers State, where over 60 people have been declared dead as a result of...

Facebook Hits Back in Internet.org India Row

Image
Facebook boss, Mark Zuckerberg, has defended the aims of his Internet.org initiative on Thursday, after several Indian firms decided to pull out of the project. Zuckerberg argued that Internet.org’s basic free services were not incompatible with net neutrality and the principle that all web services should be equally accessible. He wrote in a blog that, “We fully support net neutrality universal connectivity, therefore net neutrality can and must co-exist.” But critics of the project were quick to respond insisting that, “The internet coalition maintained that internet.org is Zuckerberg’s ambitious project to confuse hundreds of millions of emerging market users into thinking that Facebook and the Internet are one and the same.” At the heart of the row is Internet.org’s policy of “zero-rating” whereby telecoms providers agree not to pass on the costs of handling the data traffic so that consumers can receive services for free. Critics further argue this has a distorting effect on compe...

The World’s First Electric Plane

Image
When in April 2014, Airbus Group through SAS, its aircraft manufacturing division, introduced the first E-Fan aircraft in a YouTube video, not a few wondered about the viability of the project. How can an aircraft be powered by electric? But the group proved it could achieve the feat of completely switching to renewable energy, as it unveiled the E-Fan 2.0 prototype aircraft designed from the outset specifically with the use of electric power. Being the world’s first, the pioneering E-Fan 2.0 is scheduled to take its maiden flight in late 2017. According to the manufacturers, the aircraft, a two-seater plane, will be CO2-emission-free and almost silent during flight, adding that it is a “plug-in” plane with a wingspan of 31 feet. With its wings containing 120 lithium-ion polymer batteries, and twin 30-kilowatt engines, the plane is capable of flight speeds up to 136 miles per hour. Made from carbon fibre composite materials, keeping the aircraft’s weight at an incredible 1100...
