Schweinsteiger has just one year remaining on his current Bayern contract and has commanded a transfer fee in the region of £12 million. “My colleagues at Manchester United have been in touch,” Goal quoted Rummenigge as saying to reporters at a press conference on Saturday. “We’ve reached an agreement over a transfer. Eagles beat Chad in opening AFCON qualifier

Image
Keshi Striker Odion Ighalo set up Gbolahan Salami in the second half before converting a penalty kick as the Super Eagles defeated a resilient Chadian side 2-0 in their opening match of Group G in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna State. The victory brought some respite to the country’s football-crazy fans after the Flying Eagles’ elimination from the U-20 World Cup on Thursday and the Super Falcons’ 2-0 defeat to Australia at the Women’s World Cup in Canada on Friday. The Eagles struggled to strike a rhythm in the early stages but they created their first real chance in the eighth minute when Ahmed Musa chested down Gbolahan Salami’s cross inside the box for Madu Kingsley, but the left-back’s effort went wide. Two minutes later, Chad replied but it was a lame effort from Mbaian Narius. The visitors should have taken the lead in the 17th minute but Vincent Enyeama produced a world-class save, parrying for a corner. Musa then saw his free-...

'Champions League victory would take Barcelona to another level' - Bartomeu

Image
The club president says an "excellent" season will become a "fantastic" one if they can see off Juventus and claim a fifth European title Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu says a Champions League final victory over Juventus would cap a wonderful season for the club under Luis Enrique. The former Roma coach has already led the Catalans to a league-and-cup double in his first season on the bench at Camp Nou and will match Pep Guardiola’s feat of claiming a famous treble in 2009 if they can get the better of the Bianconeri in Berlin on Satuday. "The season is already excellent and it would be fantastic if we win the Champions League also,” Bartomeu said. “The double has already been achieved and we value that very highly. “The players and coaches have worked very hard this season and to be in Berlin is the fruit of their labours. It’s no surprise that they have reached the final. The fans are euphoric, but that’s normal because the team is playing so w...

I Want To Stay, Help City Win Titles – Toure

Image
Yaya Toure has ended speculation linking him with a move away from Manchester City, saying he wants to the stay at the club and help the team win major titles. The Ivorian was strongly linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium following the 2014/15 season, with Italian club Internazionale seen as a likely destination. However, Toure’s agent last week claimed the reigning African Player of the Year would be remaining with City and the 32-year-old has now broken his silence on the matter, telling the Manchester Evening News: “I will definitely stay. The fans don’t have to be worried. “My target this year is to try to do everything possible to make this team improve well and I am sure with my experience, maybe I hope, with the players coming in a couple of weeks, a couple of months, definitely it is going to be a strong City next year.” Toure wants to see the Citizens reclaim their Premier League title from Chelsea, as well as challenge for the UEFA Champions League. “It i...

Champions League Final: Suarez’s Reunion With ‘Enemies’

Image
The Champions League final between Barcelona and Juventus tomorrow in Berlin will see the controversial Luis Suarez come up against two old enemies. The Barcelona and Uruguay striker will be in direct opposition to Giorgio Chiellini and Patrice Evra in the Juve defence as the clubs battle it out to win the greatest prize in European club football. Suarez was banned from football for four months after biting Italy’s Chiellini during the World Cup in Brazil last year, meaning he was unable to make his debut for Barcelona until the end of October following his summer move from Liverpool. His controversial spell with Liverpool included being found guilty by an FA panel of racially abusing Evra during a match at Anfield in 2011 when the French defender was at Manchester United. Suarez was later handed an eight-match ban and fined £40,000 but then refused to shake hands with Evra when they met again at Old Trafford later that season. However, Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini has i...

Pele backs Blatter, Warner demands resignation

Image
FIFA boss, Sepp Blatter Brazilian legend Pele said Monday he backed Sepp Blatter’s re-election as FIFA President last week, despite the corruption scandal embroiling world football’s governing body, saying it needed an “expert” chief, AFP reports. “I was in favour,” Pele told journalists at Havana airport ahead of a match between the Cuban national team and his former club the New York Cosmos. “We needed an expert guy.” But despite Pele’s position, former vice-president of FIFA Jack Warner who is facing investigation in the current scandal on Monday demanded Blatter’s resignation. No one has brought more shame on FIFA than its president Sepp Blatter and he should step aside for a younger leader, the organisation’s former vice president Warner said. ADVERTISEMENT Pele, the only player to win three World Cup titles, closed out his career in the 1970s at the Cosmos, who will play Cuba on Tuesday in an exhibition match symbolic of the thawing ties between the United States and...

The veteran midfielder, 35, has called time on his 24 years at Camp Nou and revealed he will link up with Al Sadd following the completion of 2014-15 Barcelona legend Xavi has announced his intention to leave the club at the end of the season to join Qatari club Al Sadd. The midfielder has been with the Catalans for 24 years, since joining La Masia as an 11-year-old, and has made over 750 appearances for the first team during that time - more than any other player in the club's history. Although he has featured 41 times so far for Barca in their La Liga-winning campaign, he has been used as a substitute more often than a starter under Luis Enrique. "I am announcing my departure from the club this season," Xavi told reporters at a press conference on Thursday. "This decision is final and difficult. "The club offered me a renewal - a very good one - but I had already made my decision. I think it's time to leave Camp Nou now. "I'll contin...

Pep Guardiola has no intention of leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the 2014-15 campaign amid rumours linking him with a move to Manchester City. The 44-year-old's contract with the Bundesliga champions runs until the summer of 2016, but negotiations over an extension have been put on hold until the summer, fuelling speculation about a potential exit. Nevertheless, Guardiola has made it clear that he is keen to stay at Bayern for the foreseeable future and has not been in touch with any other clubs. "Manchester City? I did not receive any offers and I am not waiting for them. I hope to stay at Bayern Munich for a long time," Guardiola said at a press conference.
